On Feb 2nd 2015, 24 citizens of various Himalayan states set out for a second Yatra from Haridwar to Gangasagar in West Bengal, covering a distance of more than 2000 kms (Yatra 1 was Gangotri to Haridwar, Oct’14). They will raise awareness about the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and its communities. Indiscriminate dam constructions have put them all at stake. The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) submitted a non-mandated report giving a nod to all dams without doing a cumulative impact assessment of 70 hydropower projects in the Himalayas. Whereas, Supreme Court-directed expert body recommended that construction of 23 of these dams be dropped as they will cause irreversible damage to the Himalayan ecosystem! All these dams are on the Alkananda-Bhagirathi river basin. And hundreds more are scheduled to be built on all major river systems across the Himalayas – from J&K to Arunachal Pradesh – making this ecologically unstable region prone to further disasters like the floods of Uttarakhand in 2013. The Yatra participants will collect people’s signatures, and hold 50 meetings with communities across various states. The petitions collected off- and online will be presented to the Prime Minister after the Yatra along with the appeal to provide region specific solution for development. Help spread the words wide and far by sending an email to all your contacts to sign the petition here. And by sharing the petition via Facebook and Twitter.
